Joanne "Jo" Murray, née Rowling OBE (born 31 July 1965), who writes under the pen name J. K. Rowling, is a British writer and author of the Harry Potter fantasyseries. She was born to Peter James Rowling and Anne Rowling née Volant on 31 July 1965 in Yate, Gloucestershire, England 10 miles (16.1 km) northeast of Bristol. She then moved to Winterbourne when she was four years old. At nine, she moved back to Gloucestershire to the village of Tutshill, close to Chepstow in Wales. She grew up in the Forrest of Dean.
