Joanne "Jo" Murray, née Rowling OBE (born 31 July 1965), who writes under the pen name J. K. Rowling, is a British writer and author of the Harry Potter fantasyseries. She was born to Peter James Rowling and Anne Rowling née Volant on 31 July 1965 in Yate, Gloucestershire, England 10 miles (16.1 km) northeast of Bristol. She then moved to Winterbourne when she was four years old. At nine, she moved back to Gloucestershire to the village of Tutshill, close to Chepstow in Wales. She grew up in the Forrest of Dean.

Jessica Isabel Rowling Arantes was born on the 27th July 1993. While JK Rowling was pregnant with her she wrote the first three chapters of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. She has grown up with the Harry Potter series in everyday of her life.

David Gordon Rowling Murray was born on 24 March 2003. He is the son of JK Rowling and her second husband Neil Michael Murray. Shortly after Rowling began writing Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince she took a break from working on the novel to care for him in his early infancy.

Mackenzie Jean Rowling Murray was born 23 January 2005. She is Rowling's youngest child, to whom she dedicated Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
