The first book was constructed by the Romans. It consisted of parchment that was gathered into signatures and binding them. The end result was called a 'codex'. Before this, all information was written on scrolls, or in the case of the Sumerian civilization, clay and wax tablets. The first book was believed to have been written by the Sumerians around 1300BC.

The concept of books as we know them today evolved over time, with contributions from various ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. The invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg in the 15th century revolutionized book production and distribution, making books more accessible to a wider audience.
