In the Books of Samuel, Eli is a high priest at the temple of Shiloh, where he spoke with and blessed Hannah. She had been in his temple praying for a child, and it was Eli who spoke with her when the other priest thought she was a common drunkard. He gave her Yahweh's blessing and comforted her about her lack of a child thus far.
