Ali Baba and the forty thieves is one of the many stories found in the framed anthology 1001 Arabian Nights. The credited author in the text itself is Scheherazade the wife of an Arabian prince, however, she may well be a fictional character herself.
As with all the stories in 1001 Arabian Nights the story may come from folk tales any where from Turkey to China.
One theory has the story added on later by one of the translators of 1001 Arabian Nights Antoine Galland.
