The Franks were first sent to the Westerbork work camp in Holland. In October 1944, they were among the last shipment to leave Westerbork. They were send to Auschwitz in Poland. Upon their arrival, Otto Frank was separated from his wife and children. He never saw them again.

Anne, Margot, and their mother remained together for about a month. Margot and Mrs. Frank had a chance to go to a labor camp, where they would have had a much better chance for survival. However, Anne was rejected because she had scabies (a serious skin infection caused by lice). Her mother and sister chose to remain in Auschwitz with her.

In November 1944, Anne and Margot were selected for a shipment to the Bergen-Belsen camp in Germany. Mrs. Frank was too ill to accompany them. She died in January 1945, of starvation. Anne and Margot died of typhus in late February or early March, 1945.

Otto Frank was the only member of his family who survived.
