Crime and Punishment takes place in 19th century Russia in St. Petersburg. The book starts with Rodion Raskolnikov on his way to rob and murder a pawn broker. He is a dropout from school and cannot afford rent for his one-room flat. He commits two murders and robs the apartment. he does not sell or use the items he steal because he is afraid of the authorities tracing him to the crime. At first he avoids getting caught. However, over time he starts to go crazy with the knowledge of what he has done. This is only magnified when the lead investigator of the crime, Porfiry, begins to suspect him of the murders. The book goes shows Rodion's descent into insanity and

his eventual punishment.
