Because 1) They were 'revolutionary,' to that generation, at least. 2) They were (broadly speaking) Communistic. 3) They were--intentionally or not--atheistic. 4) Conspiracy theorists, at leas, will tell you that there is a deliberate 'tension' maintained in foreign affairs, as this is the best climate for monopolists--briefly, rich people--to make lots of money.
