"Flutterbudget", while not defined in Webster's dictionary, is a term of endearment Pa used when describing Laura's personality. Throughout her books, Laura often contrasted the difference between both her mother and her sister Mary (patient, quiet, and good), and herself (impatient, headstrong, and naughty).

She recorded several anecdotes for us and shared stories of how her impulsive behavior had unpleasant consequences. In the first chapter of "These Happy Golden Years", she is about to leave home to teach school for the first time, and looks to Pa for advice.

Pa: "There is one thing you must guard against. You are so quick, Flutterbudget. You are apt to act or speak first, and think afterward. Now you must do your thinking first, and speak afterward. If you will remember to do that, you will not have any trouble."
