I could get technical and say that all of her characters are NOT in fact males (Cherry Valance from "The Outsiders" was an important female protagonist, for example; In "That Was Then, This Is Now" Cathy was the leading girl, and a major part of Bryon's life. Same with Jamie from Tex. Not so much Cassandra or Patty from Rumble Fish, though.) but I understand what you're saying. :)
Hinton explains it in different interviews, and she says she's just a lot more comfortable writing male parts. She was a tomboy growing up, and had many guy friends. I guess it's just what you're exposed to most -- or what kind of message you're trying to portray. ;) Unfortunately, people never take us girls as tough. Pfft.
Hope this helps. :)

People base characters in books after all kinds of things, including other fictional characters and acquaintances of the author. No one is stopping you from basing your characters off members of your clan, so go ahead! Find inspiration in any way you can, it isn't wrong. If you are concerned about legal issues, all published books have disclaimers about the fictionalization of all events and characters, and it is doubtful that a member of your clan could prove that a character was based on them.
you cant, its already been made and all the characters chosen for the upcoming books
