Although Percy Shelley did elope to Scottand with his first wife, Harriet Shelley (née Westbrook), his marriage to Mary in 1816 was not an elopement. Percy and Mary ran away to Switzerland in July of 1814 - abandoning his first wife - but returned to England six weeks later. Since they didn't get married at the time - and couldn't since his first wife was still alive - it doesn't really constitute an "elopement" but since he remained with Mary from then on, it essentially was. Percy never reunited with his first wife, who drowned in the Serpentine (a lake in Hyde Park) in December 1816. Percy and Mary were married a few weeks later (on 30 December 1816) -
