Why did Roald Dahl write 'The BFG'?

The book The BFG is about where a girl named Sophie stays up until witching hour (midnight i think?) And she gets tooken away by a Giant. The BFG is a friendly Giant, while all of the other Giants are mean. Then Sohpie and The BFG come up with the plan to get rid of the other Gaints.
