June 12 1942 was Anne Frank's thirteenth birthday. Out of all her gifts, it was the one that her father gave her that was her favourite. It was an autograph book, bound with red-and-white checkered cloth and with a small lock on the front. Anne used it as diary and called it 'Kitty'. Kitty became Anne's true friend during hiding and holds Anne's story during the Second World War.

After her death, her father published the book under the name Het Achterhuis ("The Secret") in 1950. The book is now called, "Diary of a Young Girl" and is one of the most read books in the words.
