If your engine light is on chances are you have a defective thermal sensor. It's location is found on the bottom side of intake on 90 Ford rangers w/ 2.3l. If new sensor doesn't do the trick pull the instrument cluster and check plug connector by squeezing side release tabs. look to make sure copper connectors have no oxidization.

OK. so after some more research it turns out that there is a coolant temperature sensor as well as a coolant temperature sending unit. The sending unit is used for the gauge, the sensor used for the cooling fans. The sending unit for the 2.3L is on the left rear of engine, above the oil filter. For the 2.9L it is on the intake manifold, below the throttle body.
