There are mods to fix this problem, and Ford Lincoln Mercury dealers will see instructions to change the wiring of the alternator to be like that of the '01 and '02 Cougar2s when they go to change the Alt, not all alternator shops will necessarily know this is an issue. If you take this on yourself, know this, the after market (ie motocraft) alternators for the Cougar are not nearly as reliable as the genuine Ford OEM product. And also, even if you take the alternator to have it checked at pep-boys or such, it will probably show that it is still good while it is indeed the issue.
