How does a straw flute work?

When you blow on the end of the straw, the two pieces of the tip vibrate together. This makes a vibration, which is necessary to make sound. But the tips don't just vibrate at any old frequency. No sir! The vibration travels down the straw, and reflects from the end. This sets up a wave in the air in the straw; the vibration will bounce back and forth between the two ends. It is this vibration that you are hearing! Changing the length of the straw (by clipping it off, or by making a straw trombone) changes the time necessary for the vibration to travel up and down the straw, and so changes the pitch. And making a hole in the straw, so it is like a real flute, lets the vibration bounce off from where the hole is, which will also change the pitch!

Why are pitch and frequency similar to loudness and intensity?

sound has properties of loudness and pitch. The loudness of a sound depends on the amplitude of vibration. A speaker making a loud sound moves back and forth more than a speaker making a soft sound. The pitch of a sound depends on the frequency of vibration. A speaker making a high pitched sound like a siren vibrates with a higher frequency than the same speaker making a low pitched sound like thunder

Why does sound do not travel in a vacuum?

sound is the vibration of matter that your ears are able to pick up with the eardrums and send to the brain which interprets what the sound is. Out in space if a vibration is caused by something there is no air for it to push along thus the vibration is limited to the thing doing the vibrating. If you were to have your space helmet against the thing making the noise or rather vibrating out in space you would hear it.
