The early VW's may have been, but I think since 1967 when VW changed to the 12v car battery that they then went to Negative ground.

In most properly wired cars, a red cable goes to the positive terminal on the battery, and a black cable goes to the negative terminal. If color coding doesn't work, negative is the ground cable, positive is where your power is going.

Some never used positive ground and always had negative ground. The last year that I know where positive ground was used was in 1969 when Jaguar switched to negative.
