In theory - MAYBE - if it shorted out and fumes were extremely dense, etc - but even in theory it would be essentially impossible.

In practice - NO. Despite ubiquitous urban folklore claiming it happened here or there, there are NO recorded instances of a cell phone starting a fire at a gas station - ever - anywhere. For a more comprehensive discussion of the urban folklore about cell phones and gas station fires, refer to the Snopes.com web site under Fact Check > Automobiles > Highway Hazards > Fuelish Pleasures.

... and those warnings you see at some gas stations? Just lawyers trying to head off frivolous lawsuits.
