An automotive alternator is a three-phase generator with a built-in rectifier. Some alternators have permanent magnets that generate electricity as soon as you turn the pulley. Others have a field winding that requires a +12 volt feed via carbon brush to create an electromagnet. Controlling this current also controls the main genarator output current.
