My dear friend, you have experienced an engine "throwing a rod". That is to say, a piston rod broke within the engine block, thus the loud knock, The engine will not start with a jump because it cannot turn because of the broken rod. The reason it starts with a tow or a push is because the engine is "forced to turn" when the transmission is engaged and the clutch is released. The loud noise will be there and mpre damage will be caused by trying to turn the engine without repairing it - damage as severe as a broken block, scored crankshaft, etc.
The condition may possibly be piston slap.
your face a bru
== == I do believe if you hear a knocking noise that your crank shaft could be failing. Which means you will need a new engine. Have it checked out. Replace the harmonic balancer they will make a bad knocking noise. When you start it and the oil light goes out and it knocks, this is what is wrong with it.
you proably have a heavy lifter which when u first start it let it worm up so the oil starts flowing if u don't u could bend a valve
if its a low knocking noise it is normal on the 3.1 engine!! if it is loud check to make sure the valves are getting oil!! I have a 2000 Malibu v6 and it is the same way.
Sounds to me like piston slap. After a while, the piston rings wear enough material away from the cylinder walls that there can be a larger gap than specification. In colder weather this gap increases even further, and when you first start your engine, the torque applied to the pistons by the rods and crank make them pivot. The lower part of the pistons hit against the cylinder wall, and you hear something like a knocking noise coming from your motor. As the motor warms up, your pistons and cylinder walls expand, thus filling the gap that was once there (and you no longer hear that knocking noise).
you have a cracked flywheel/flexplate
I would say you either have a rod knocking or lifter knocking. I know in the 3.8 litre motors they are known to knock alittle when you cold start them. Most Grand Ams, Grand Prixs are like this. My sister has a 2002 Grand Am that does this and the noise goes away once it's warmed up. I would also double check and make sure your oil is full. get your car to a garage for a def solution.
There could be numerous reasons why a Suburban is making engine noise at start up. It could be anything from a blown gasket to a spark plug. A mechanic will be able to find out the cause of the noise.
The lifters are failing and need replaced to stop the noise.
stater or silanoid
The Hummer H2 is a 2005 SUT with the 6.0L Vortec and a Magna Charger supercharger. It runs great with plenty of power, but I'm concerned about some noise I'm getting out of it. When I first start it up, everything sounds fine. After running a mile or so, I start to get a knocking sound. I only notice the sound when idling, not when running.
