They shouldn't turn off until the battery protection feature kicks them off automatically. I can't remember but they should time out (or turn off) within 3 minutes when door is left open.On my 1995 Ford Explorer they do for about 40 minutes , until the factory installed battery run down protection system kicks in and shuts them off
