There's a muffler in there somewhere, which is basically a bucket with some baffles in it. The muffler will trap some of the sound which makes the engine run quieter. These days it's also a catalytic converter there. It's another bucket that looks like it's been filled with layers of cardboard, with all their small channels aligned lengthwise. As the exhaust fumes travel through these channels they react chemically with a liner in the catalytic converter and gets turned into something slightly less nasty.

If there is not enough room for dual exh. because of transmission cross member. Do as I did . Take out cross member weld thick piece of metal about 9" long where exh. will be then cut a notch in cross member for exhaust. IT works wonderful!
