you may be able to slide a thin tube down the dipstick tube and use some kind of pump to suck it out, but removing the drain plug is the easiest way. You can get a "liquiVac" tool from Lowe's. I use it in my lawn mower, but it does not have nearly as much oil as a car/truck.
