If the gas cap needs replacing, the "Check Engine" light will usually come on. Tighten the cap until it clicks 4 or 5 times... if the light goes out, you're cap is good, if the light stays on, replace the cap.
The gas cap is loose and needs to be replaced.
Your gas cap may have been left loose or the oring on the cap needs replaced unless you have lost it. If this is the case do yourself a favor and buy the thirty dollar Lexus replacement
If the gas cap tether is broken it can be replaced by removing the rubber plug or rivet that holds the tether in place. A new gas cap will need to be purchased and the rivet or rubber plug will have to be reinserted to hold it in the gas cap well.
i have replaced my gas cap twice on my 2004 grandprix and the lcheck gas cap lights goes off for about two weeks and comes back on what could this be
the gas cap needs tightened
It needs to be replaced.
Sometimes it comes on when you have to replace your air filter due to it being dirty. It will also come on when the gas cap is not tightened or needs to be replaced.
Gas cap is loose or needs replacing
This can be one of 3 things. Your air filter is completely clogged and does give enough air and this cuts the engine completely off. Second your gas filter, needs to be replaced, which is in the gas tank. Third the bank one on your first spark plug needs to be looked at. The best way is to take it to AutoZone or PepBoys and have them run a test on it. The quickest and fastest way is to change the gas cap (make sure your gas cap has to notches on it).
I replaced a broken Gas Cap 2 weeks ago and the Check Engine Light came on 1 week ago. I got the code P4055 today - and am hoping that the New Gas Cap will fix the problem. How can I reset the Check Engine Light?
We had a similar issue. We replaced the gas cap and the fuel filter. The smell was still there. A small puddle was discovered only after parking it over night. We replaced two fuel lines underneath the brake cylinder area.
I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON MY 2002 EXPEDITION RECENTLY. THERE IS A CHARCOAL CANISTER MOUNTED UNDER THE CAR BETWEEN THE GAS CAP FILL TUBE AND THE BUMPER ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. THERE IS A RELIEF VALVE MOUNTED ON THE END. I REPLACED THIS AND CORRECTED THE PROBLEM.
