First, make sure your all of your electrical connections and fuses are good. (battery cables are not corroded and cable to starter and ground are good) If they are good, it sounds like you either have a bad ignition switch or starter. You might try having someone turn the ignition switch to start position while using a multi-tester to see if you are getting power to the starter. If you are getting power to the starter, and it won't engage, chances are you need a new starter. If you do not have power to the starter, you might have a bad ignition switch. In certain circumstances you might try tapping on the starter with a hammer while someone is turning the ignition switch to see if it will engage. If it will, I would look to a bad starter. I have found that a majority of the time, a starter is the problem, not the ignition switch. Hope this helps.

2000 cavalier wont start and dash lights not coming on?

If the 2000 Cavalier has no lights an will not start, there is an electrical issue. Check the battery, alternator, and the wiring from the battery all the way to the starter to find the problem.

When you charge battery and will start but drive and cut off and wont start back 91 Chevy cavalier battery is dead again?

The battery only stores electricity, it does not create it. The alternator puts back the energy that was used by the starter and also provides enough electrical energy to keep the accessories running without draining the battery. If the alternator isn't operating properly the battery will discharge. Many auto parts retailers will test your alternator for free in hopes of selling you a new alternator or other part that will help you solve your problem.

Just a few weeks ago the alternator went and then a week or two after that the battery died smokingallowed say's...There are several things to check but the answer lies with either fuel or fire...First answer guy is sad that his alternator and battery lasted 12 years...(sigh)

Why won't a 1994 Chevy cavalier start unless it is jumped. The ABS makes a clicking noise and we have changed the alternator.?

Generally, if a car engine will not turn over without a jump start, the battery is not charged. Either the alternator is not charging it, or the battery has failed and will not hold a charge. Since you have replaced the alternator, that leaves the battery. You can have your battery tested at an auto parts store before buying a new one. It is also possible that there is something draining your battery while the engine is off. The clicking noise from the ABS indicates possible electrical system malfunctions that are best diagnosed by a professional mechanic.

What will cause s new battery in a 2000 Chevy venture to die?

Alternator is defective and is not keeping the battery charged. Or, you have a light or relay that is on pulling power from the battery. Start the engine and check the voltage at the battery with a digital volt meter. You should have 13.5 to 15.5 volts if the alternator is good.

Chevy truck tries to start but dies down after a bit as if taking a load it cannot handle why?

If a Chevy truck tries to start but then doesn't, it might be that the battery is low. Check the alternator also to make sure that battery is charging properly. Some larger motors require a larger cranking amp from the battery to start.
