QSX15 Engine Base Timing.
Tools required; * Timing tool kit, part no. 3163021,Timing tool kit contains some wedges and a pin.Timing Pin, part no.3163020, and three sets of timing wedges, part no.3163024, 3163026 and 3163027 * Workshop manual, Part no. 3666239 (this manual is required for setting backlashes, clearances and also for bolt tightening torque values etc. to the manufactures standard)
Ok you have the timing tool kit in your hand and now you are ready to set Engine base timing, so you have to know the timing code for the engine you are working on. the timing code is located on the engine data plate.
Timing code (inj / Valve) 4/6. well something like that and it depends on your engine.
as you can see the written order of the timing code, the first code is for the injector wedge, the second code is for Valve wedge.
so that means you have to use the wedge with the injector timing code for the camshaft injector and the wedge with valve timing code for the camshaft valve.
Procedure: * Rotate the crankshaft until the crank pin mark on the outside diameter of the damper is aligned with the mark on the gear housing. * remove the plug from the cylinder block which is on the intake side of the engine block (front side) almost to the center to the crankshaft about one foot away from the gear cover. (i think this explanation is ok for the location of the plug for pin). * insert the lock pin and lock the crankshaft in place. * rotate camshafts to the proper position ready for wedge insertion. look at the camshaft near the second bearing for the camshaft from the gear cover. * inset the appropriate timing wedges for the appropriate camshaft, injector wedge for the injector camshaft, Valve wedge for the valve camshaft. the wedge is inserted between the camshaft and cylinder head, the location for the wedge on QSX15 is near the second bearing for the camshaft from the gear cover. * lightly tap the top of the wedge with a mallet to make sure it is properly seated.Do not drive the wedge into place.Engine damage can occur. * Follow gear installation and backlash procedure.
The front suspension will not hold the weight of the Cummins.
On an N14 Cummins engine, the timing sensors are typically located on the front of the engine, near the timing cover. There are usually two sensors: the crankshaft position sensor, which monitors the position of the crankshaft, and the camshaft position sensor, which tracks the position of the camshaft. These sensors provide critical data for the engine's electronic control unit (ECU) to optimize fuel injection and ignition timing. Regular inspection of these sensors is important for proper engine performance.

On the Cummins diesel it is between the power steering pump and the engine timing cover. The camshaft position sensor on a 6.7 Cummins engine is typically located on the front of the engine, near the timing cover. It is positioned on the driver's side, often near the top, and can be accessed from the engine bay. This sensor plays a crucial role in monitoring the position of the camshaft for proper engine timing and performance. Always consult the vehicle's service manual for precise location and replacement procedures.
Inside the front timing cover. While you are in there would be a good time to tab the killer dowel pin (KDP). It would also be a good time to set the P-7100 injection pump timing (94-98 models).
On a Cummins N14 Red Top engine, the timing sensor, also known as the crankshaft position sensor, is typically located near the front of the engine, close to the harmonic balancer or crankshaft pulley. It monitors the position and speed of the crankshaft to aid in fuel injection timing. Accessing it may require removing some engine components for better visibility and reach. Always consult the service manual for specific details related to your engine's configuration.
