Take a flat-head screwdriver and pry off the plastic panel on the respective rear side. It looks like a vent.
The brake light is the one at the top. Twist the bulb holder toward the outside of the car (counter clockwise for the left bulb if you are facing the rear, clockwise for the right.) The first time I did this it was sticky and took a bit of effort. Then pull the holder out.
The bulb then pulls out from the holder. The first time I replaced the bulb it also was sticky and was a little difficult to pull, but it finally came out.
Replace the bulb, put the holder back into place and twist it clockwise to lock in.
Then replace the panel.
