To change the ball joints on a 2001 Dodge 1500 4x4 quad cab, first, safely lift the vehicle and remove the front wheel. Disconnect the brake caliper and rotor, then remove the hub assembly to access the ball joint. Use a ball joint press to remove the old ball joint and install the new one, ensuring it is secured properly. If the u-joint has never been changed you can't grease them because factory u-joints don't have grease alimites...you will have to change the u-joint. After market u-joints have alimites.
Remove the tire and wheel. Remove the retaining nut from the top of the ball joint. Pound the ball joint out with a hammer or mallet. Reverse the process to install the new ball joint.
Remove the rear U-Joint and be very careful not to loose caps or any needle bearings. Uses lock rings to hold it in place. Tape it together with duck tape. Now pull the drive shaft out of the transmission and remove the front U-Joint from the driveshaft and replace it. Reinstall in reverse order.
