I've done the job on my '96 2.3 Ranger XLT simply using a flexible spring-like socket extension. You can get it on any respectable tool store. Mine is about 10 inches long. It was more difficult to insert the cables back than replacing the spark plugs. Even so, it didn't took more than 1 hour.
