Take it to a mechanic! 5 of the 6 can be changed with moderate effort however the one on the passenger side, rear cylinder is near impossible. I busted my knuckles and dropped the socket MANY times - (have a magnet on hand!). It is in your best interest to have a qualified mechanic do it who has experience working on these day in and day out. I know it costs a little bit but believe me the this is not one of those things that you want to try unless you have A LOT of patience and can spare some skin off of the knuckles!
OR !!, I'VE BEEN THROUGH THE SAME THING & YOU ARE RIGHT, BUT I KNOW THE ANSWER (OR IT WORKED FOR ME ANYWAY). What I did is I either crawled under the truck from the front or behind the wheel on the passenger side using the shortest plug socket AND a 3/8'' drive ratchet with the smallest, thinnest head w/ the longest handle that you can find. It WILL still be a tight fit and use your patience GOOD LUCK!
For a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac : There are ( 6 spark plugs ) for your 4.0 liter V6 engine
you have to take the plastic off the top of the moter and the spark plugs are under all that stuff i know it sucks but you can have the shop change them for a few hundred
MotorCraft
( 6 spark plugs ) for your 4.0 liter SOHC , V6 engine
Yes. It could make it better or worse.

remove the coil packs then the spark plugs dont just drop the plugs when installing this will damage the electrode
how difficult is it to change spark plugs on a 2002 ford explorer. It is a 4x4 and has the initials on it xtl or something like that. Can you please help me cause they are trying to charge me an arm and leg to have it done.
when do you change spark plugs
Obviously- the spark plugs were not the issue :)
Now would be a good time to do a tuneup.
Make sure you are using Ford OEM (Motorcraft is not always OEM) Spark Plugs that are designed for you explorer.
