1. Determine if the battery needs replacement or just a charge. Turn the motorcycle on to run, remove the seat, and check with a voltmeter if the voltage at the battery goes to 14 volts. 14 volts because it is a 14 volt charging system; a little below 14 is ok. Record value and shut off the bike.
2. Wait about 10 to 20 minutes and check the battery voltage again. it should not be below 12 volts, if so, change the battery.
3. Remove the black (-) wire first and then the red (+). There will be some sparks but not to serious.
4. pull the battery out and place a new, CHARGED, battery back in and reverse the above proceedure.

When you see any sign the old battery is dying.
Yes, as long as you get the right battery so that it is an identical fit. Either get a BMW battery, or an Interstate MPT-H6. You will have to plug one of the vents on the interstate battery, and use the vent hose from your original BMW battery.
With the bike on its centerstand, the gearbox oil level should be just at the bottom of the hole for the fill plug.
BMW's have auto-locks a little different from other cars, if your battery is dead, the doors won't open. To change the battery, you need to open the trunk, this is where the battery is located. You will see a panel with some screws, you need to remove that and underneath is the battery.
I was informed by a BMW dealer there isn't a battery to replace and you have to order a new remote and then have it programmed by the dealer.
To change your batter in your BMW 5 series first turn your car off. Then remove existing battery by losing the bolts and removing the positive and negative cables from the battery. Install the new battery by bolting the battery in place and reattaching the cables.
