How do you change the fuel filter in a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer?

The fuel pump and fuel filter are all one unit. The part to replace it is around $90. It is best to perform this service with a half a tank of fuel or less. Start by removing the back seat. This is done by pulling up on either side of the rear seat to release one clip on each side of the seat (fig 1). On the drivers side of the vehicle there is a black plate being held in place by 4 Phillips head screws (fig 2). Once you remove the black cover there will be the fuel pump/fuel filter assembly (fig 3). Remove the electrical plug the fuel line and the over flow line. Remove the six 8mm nuts holding the cover plate in place (fig 4). Remove the cover plate first and then carefully remove the entire fuel pump assembly (fig 5). Reassemble in reverse order.
