If there is not a drain plug on the bottom of the differential then you will have to remove the rear cover. If that is the case you will need a cover gasket. If it is limited slip, then it will require a special additive. Also be sure of the weight and if it is synthetic or not.
every 50,000 miles

To change the rear differential on a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer, start by safely lifting the vehicle and securing it on jack stands. Drain the differential fluid by removing the cover, then take out the old differential assembly by unbolting it from the axle housing. Install the new differential in reverse order, ensuring all bolts are tightened to the manufacturer's specifications. Finally, replace the cover with a new gasket, refill with the appropriate differential fluid, and check for leaks.

Locate the rear differential housing, remove the fill plug first to ensure you can refill it later, then drain the old fluid by removing the drain plug. After the fluid has drained completely, replace the drain plug and refill the differential with the recommended fluid through the fill hole until it reaches the proper level. Finally, replace the fill plug and check for any leaks.
