Unfortunately you do it with difficulty. Isuzu maliciously decided not to have a transmission dipstick on the transmission so the average guy cannot check it easily. Per the book, the transmission must be warmed to a precise temperature and then an overflow plug on the transmission is taken out. Fluid is added until it starts to flow out of the overflow plug and then you know it is full. it obviously must be done from under the vehicle. I would not have bought mine had I known this.

Could be low fluid,a bad sensor or transmission going bad.
A 1998 automatic transmission may not work very well on a 1999 Isuzu Rodeo. This is mainly due to the incompatibility of the two engine systems and some modifications may need to be made.Ê

To change the transmission oil in a 1998 Isuzu Rodeo, start by ensuring the vehicle is on a level surface and safely lifted. Remove the transmission pan bolts and carefully lower the pan to drain the old fluid. Replace the transmission filter if applicable, clean the pan, and install a new gasket. Refill the transmission with the appropriate type and amount of fluid through the dipstick tube, ensuring to check the fluid level while the engine is running and the vehicle is in park.

The guy at the local transmission repair shop told me it sits on top of the engine control module. You have to remove the console to get to it.
