First VW said that fluid lasts lifetime of the vehicle and you don't need to change it, but after their trannies started to fail they say you are better to change it once in a while. Because transmission wasn't designed for an oil change this procedure is complicated and new fluid needs to be pumped into the unit, so not just any shop can do it.
