Disconnect the negative battery cable for 10 minutes.
On a lot of late model vehicles, made in the last 10 years, that will no longer work. You will need access to a scan tool to reset the check engine light. Also, if the cause of the light has not been repaired, the light will come back on.
Disconnect the battery for about 10-15 minutes resets the computer, and that means no Check Engine Light after you have fixed/ replaced what was wrong.
I have a 98 mystique, and when the check engine light comes on, I simply disconnect the positive battery terminal for a couple of minutes. When I replace it, the check engine light is cleared. It resets the computer.

pull dome fuse above knee. in fuse box. pulling battery makes ecu relearn everything. dome fuse resets memory only. Maybe just disconnect battery for a couple of minutes and it will reset
Disconnect the battery cables for 15 minutes. Then put the key in the ignition and turn it as if to start the motor, and hold it in that position for 30 seconds. (This resets the computer, codes, engine, everything.) When powering it back up and running the engine, it may run slightly rough for the first few minutes as the motor resets and re-samples all systems.
Easiest way is to disconnect the positive terminal on the battery for a couple hours. This resets the computer log and the light will stay OFF until the problem occurs again and trips the light back ON.
