If the drive belt needs replacing it could also send the engine out of sync. Stand on the passengers side of the engine next to the wheel. Look down below the alternator & 6" towards the front, U'll see the belt tensioner. It's the slanted 'bar' with a pulley on each end. The lower pulley on the tensioner has 2 marks about an inch apart where the 2 halves of that pulley bolt together. On the other half of the same pulley u'll see 1 mark. U may need a flash light & some papertowels to clean off the marks. The single mark HAS TO BE IN BETWEEN the 2 marks on the opposite side. If the single mark is alot more to either of the 2 marks opposite it u need a new drive belt. To change the drive belt, put a 3/8 ratchet head into the squared hole in the upper pulley from where the 'marks' are. Then push the ratch handle towards the windshield & u'll see the drivebelt loosen. You can put a pipe on the ratch handle to extend it & give more leverage. Then put the new drivebelt on the same way u took the old 1 off.

Never lacked power and didn't downshift on hills the way the previous 1988 Regal I kept 5 years did. The 1988 Regal average a little over 28 mpg interstate driving with a smaller engine. Both cars were two door models. General Motors made a grave mistake when they quit making these kind of cars. These cars had superior power, great handling and better gas mileage than most foreign cars. They were roomy inside. I had a '87 3.8... the 3.8 V6 is much the same for many years, I think this is what you mean? Anyway, the sensor is on the accessory end of the engine, located just above the large crankshaft pulley at the bottom of the motor. It is not easy to see. The sensor is held in with one bolt and has two wires coming out of it. If I recall, the fastening is adjustable for gap between the sensor and crank reluctor.
