In a '96 with the 3.8L, the cam position sensor is in the timing chain cover, near the very top. It's just below the rear bolt on the thermostat housing. If you're going to replace it, make sure that the new one comes with the paper spacer on the end. It's a little dot of thick paper (about 1 milimeter thick) that is provided to set the gap between the end of the sensor and a special disc on the end of the cam.
