If manual transmission, depress the clutch and move the shift lever into neutral.
If automatic transmission, you will need the keys to unlock the shifter mechanism. There is no other way around it. As a side note, you will not be able to removed the key in neutral either as it must be in Park. Either way, with the auto trans, one is hosed.
The car has been stolen and the insurers are trying to wriggle out of it by saying the car must have been stolen using the key! Which is not the case. It couldn't have been winched onto a flatbed either. Just need to know if it is possible to put the car into neutral without the keys. Please help.

Did you lose your car keys or are you looking to hijack a car? ;)
When pressed, it allows the shifter to be moved from park to any other gear without turning the key and depressing the brake. This allows your car to be put in neutral without having the keys in the ignition.
1) Get into car 2) Put keys in ignition 3) Turn to "on" position 4) Apply Brake 5) Shift into neutral 6) Start the car
The car will not run without the keys in the car period.
