On my '95 maxima I have to leave the battery disconnected for ~24 hours to reset the engine lignt.
On my 1987 Maxima there is a button to push to reset the light. It is located underneath the passenger kick panel.

Go to autozone and have them clear it, easiest way, go to yoru local mechanic, he should have a obd scan tool, pay to have him remove it.

There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.

If your check engine light is on then check for the code and find out whats its about. It can also be a short in the wiring harness.
After reading the code, fixing the cause, you clear the code with a scan tool.
Code P0731 means A/T first gear signal fault
If the light comes on there is a code. Have the code checked and fix the cause. If the light is on with no codes, then you have a computer problem.
You dont they are meant to be in the car for the life of the engine. But you can buy a timing light and check the timing.
