You can determine if the oil pump is not working by checking the oil pressure gauge; if it reads low or zero while the engine is running, it may indicate a pump failure. Additionally, if you notice unusual engine noises, such as knocking or grinding, it could signal inadequate oil circulation. Finally, inspecting for oil leaks or checking the oil level can also provide clues, as a malfunctioning pump may lead to a drop in oil levels or visible leaks.
Check oil pressure with a manual gauge
oil pump is defective and not working.
If you have oil pressure it is working.
My guess is low or no oil pressure.
Apparently you cant get any oil :)
If it is not working you have no oil pressure and the oil light will come on or the oil pressure gauge will drop to 0. You will also hear engine noise, as in, pecking, or knocking. Engine will also overheat very quickly.
Need to know the year and what you are working on. Ask your question again with this info.
