Normally a worn timing chain becomes noisy. That is the first sign of trouble ahead. It is very rare for timing chain to fail as they are designed to last the life of the engine. But, it is possible.

If you think it is going bad STOP DRIVING and get it changed immediately. If the timing belt/chain goes while you are motoring it will ruin the engine.
