The easiest way to find out is to look at the temperature gauge. Typically, if it's running over halfway, then it's "running hot". Also, look for steam rising from beneath the hood.

If your car is overheating, pull over and shut it off IMMEDIATELY. Take extra care when opening the hood, as the steam can burn you. NEVER open the radiator or fill cap while it is hot, as the hot coolant can gush and burn you severely.

Check the oil for the presence of water or coolant. The oil will typically look milky if there is a mixture of coolant. If the oil looks milky or if there are water droplets on the dipstick, you probably have cracked heads or a blown head gasket.
