I'm weak on Fords, but radiators are filled either at the radiator or the overflow bottle. The overflow bottle will be marked coolant only.
On a 1997 Ford Taurus the thread on cap on the engine coolant reservoir is the pressure cap / radiator cap

If you have coolant on the top of the engine it could be a leaky thermostat housing or a leaking intake gasket.

On a 1997 Ford Taurus, the coolant temperature sensor is typically located near the thermostat housing on the engine block. It is usually situated on the intake manifold or cylinder head, making it accessible for inspection or replacement. To locate it more precisely, you may need to follow the coolant hoses from the radiator to the engine. Always ensure the engine is cool before attempting to access any components.
If your coolant level is down ( because of a leak somewhere ) there won't be any flow of coolant through your heater core if the coolant level drops too low and you won't get any heat Find where the coolant leak is , repair it , and refill the coolant system with 50/50 mix of antifreeze and preferably distilled water ( in colder climates you can use up to 60 % antifreeze , but don't exceed that )
Coolant is flushed from the radiator of a 1997 Honda Accord by opening the petcock and allowing the system to drain. The petcock is then closed, the system filled with water, and a flush added to the radiator to cleanse the system.

The amount of coolant it will take to fill your vehicle is dependent upon how low the coolant level is. You can add coolant to your coolant reservoir. The reservoir will have an indicator of when the coolant system is full.

The owners manual shows 7.8 quarts ( 7.4 liters ) coolant capacity on 1997 Explorer with 4.0 L V6 engine
On my 95 Taurus the cruise control wires broke off inside the steering wheel. After reconnecting them the system worked fine.
