Under the steering column are wires, one of which is a fine gauge, yellow with an oval cross section, sort of flattened. This wire is the wire that is measuring the resistance of your special ignition key that has a security resistor embedded in it. Measure the resistance across the resistor that is embedded in your original key (I went to a specialty accessories car store where they briefed me on this problem). You can find a list of all the resistor values that GM used for these keys if you need a ball park value to make sure. Once you know this resistor value you will need to solder it into the yellow wire after snipping it away from steering column. You will still have to use your old/new expensive $25 keys with the resistor embedded, however, if your key's resistor value stops from being detected by the sensor in your steering column you have already fooled the security system to make it appear as though the key is working perfectly security wise. I have tried to use generic keys from Home Depot that do not have the resistor buried in them, however, the shape must not be right since they fail to turn the ignition.
