Currently we use oil for fuel and for the production of plastics. Both of these uses are profligate in terms of efficient use, and large increases in demand will use up most available supplies within one or two hundred years. There is no way to "make more oil" because the process takes many thousands of years. Conservation of fuels will reduce the rate of consumption, and developing efficient "alternative energy" sources is a key goal. Recycling plastics is another, and limiting the use of disposable plastic items (these have unfortunately become a basic staple of Western urban societies).
