Check the voltage at the battery with the engine running. Use a DC volt meter set to the 20 volt scale. You should have a reading of between 13.5 & 15.5 volts. If the reading is significantly higher or lower than this then you need to drive it to the nearest auto parts store and have it checked professionally to be sure. But more than likely the alternator has failed.
If the bearings in the alternator get bad enough it can lock up.
