the piston on the rear calipers will turn in a clockwise motion and that is how they retract.
there is a special tool that cost about $20.00
There not like the front calipers where you put a c-clamp on the piston and squeeze them in, on the rear calipers you have to get a special tool from the parts store and as you push inward you have to turn them in.
The calipers on a Mazda 6 turn inwards you don't push them to compress them.
If the pistons have a cross in them .. Try a large screw driver and turn them while you push down

Some Ford's rear calipers have to be turned in like a screw instead of pushed in like "old fashioned" calipers. I went to Auto ZOne with the same problem and the guy knew exactly what to give me. It's a little adapter that helps you turn the caliper.
no. on the front brake calipers the pistons have to be pushed back into the calipers to make room for the new brake pads. on the rear brake calipers the pistons have to be SCREWED back into the calipers. there are notches on the inner edge of the piston rim. you can engage the notches with large needle nose pliers or a large flat washer. turn the piston clockwise as you face it to get it to go in.
Not sure on the explorer but I did rear brakes on a Taurus ( 98) & the piston turned in. I used a set of channel locks & turn them counter clock wise. There is a tool for this.
you take a pair of plyers or a caliper kit from autozone and turn in the calipers. You have to turn them clockwise to make them go back in. do not try and compress them in, you will damage them.
