To check engine light codes one would have to bring your vehicle to a mechanic who can use a computer to check the computer chip that regulates this function.
You can buy the check engine computer and the book comes with it. I know, I bought one. When your check engine light comes on, you plug it in and check the engine and it will give you the code and you look in the book for that code and it gives you the answer.

go to auto zone to get your check engine light codes read. When it blinks that means there is more than one problem. Those codes will most likely help you figure out why your car is trying to die. I have a '98 Intrepid as well and the array of problems it has is amazing. Good luck...
Ideally you would want to know why the check engine light is on. It could be something serious or it may not be. Are there any other symtoms/noises? It could be one of many things. The engine needs to be scanned for the error codes and a diagnosis can be made from there. Autozone or Advance auto will pull the codes for free. Hope this helps. "G"
you need an obdII scanner to read codes. either that or one of the many after market programmers.
