It Does not take long at all if they are exsposed to the weather, the drum is made of carbon steel, which will rust very easly! The only way to keep them from rusting is to paint them, but (VERY IMPORTANT) you do not want to paint the surface that the brake shoes come in contact with, if you do it will cause brake failure.
