If you did not start the engine no harm has been done. Drain the fuel tank, and all the fuel lines. Get as much of the gas out as possible. Fill it up with diesel and you should be ok.
Diesel engines do not require "ignition" to burn diesel fuel--it is powered by the "heat of compression" therefore diesel fuel has a much higher "flash point" than gasoline. If you were to put gasoline in a diesel engine you would probably blow the heads off the engine. Due to lower "flash point" (temperature when fuel ignites). Diesel engines have a much higher compression ratio than a petrol engine, meaning that they compress a larger volume of air into, for arguments sake, the same space as a comparitive petrol. This requires more torque to turn the engine over but results in a bigger bang. Which is why they are hard to start as they need a bigger electric motor to start them and are almost imposible to clutch start
